August 31, 2010 - Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
Kids are back in school, which means busy schedules and late nights full of homework. Not to mention endless games, practices, recitals and performances. Some days there seems to be no other option than to hit up the drive-through in the AM and throw in a frozen pizza in the PM. But don’t let all this “busy-ness” sabotage your family’s healthy lifestyle.
One experiment, performed by schools in Texas and reported by CNN, found that after just one year of mandated daily physical education and annual fitness tests for kids ages 8-18, kids began performing better on standardized tests, absentee rates dropped, as did reports of discipline problems.
The study also found a correlation between more cardiovascular activity and better grades. At the top performing schools – where at least 90 percent of the kids pass the state assessments tests – 80 percent of the students are fit, while at the poorest performing schools only 40 percent made the fitness grade.
The point is a healthy body and a healthy mind go hand-in-hand. When you make good food choices and stay active, all those natural stress-fighting responses in your body will be able to do their jobs, leaving you feeling focused, confident and happy.
So start your day with some vanilla cinnamon instant oatmeal, make smart choices in the cafeteria at lunch time, break a sweat in gym class, hit the books after school, eat a well balanced dinner then get some sleep – because you’ve got to do it all again tomorrow! But trust me, dealing with school is a lot easier when your body is fueled properly and you feel good physically.
If only we could give you extra credit for getting your daily does of whey ☺
