August 25, 2010 - Healthy Options at the Fair
State fairs are starting across the country this week and it can be tempting to indulge is those deep-fried, greasy foods. (Check out how one reporter gobbled down more than 6,400 calories at the Minnesota State Fair.) But don’t worry, there are ways to avoid eating 3 days worth of calories in one sitting! It’s all about strategy.

Don’t completely deprive yourself. You’re not going to the fair alone right? Share your treats! Splitting some not-so-healthy items lets you have a taste without going overboard.
There are some state fair options that are pretty healthy. Many fairs now offer fresh fruit, veggie platters and of course milk! You can often find smoothies for sale – so why not bring some BiPro with you to mix in for a fulfilling protein boost? Roast corn is always a favorite (yum!) – just be sure to ask for it without that deep dip in melted butter. Trust me, it will still be delicious!
State fairs can also be a great way to try some new foods – and we’re not talking about deep-fried candy bars or deep-fried spaghetti. Your fair may offer lamb burgers, gyros or even roast turkey. Those options aren’t deep-fried and are a leaner way to have something substantial without going for a corn dog or foot-long hot dog.
Make sure you stay hydrated during the fair. Drink plenty of water and avoid the big glasses of soda. Drinking water will also help you cut down on the number of calories you’re putting away during your trip.
And don’t forget about the time you’re going to spend walking around the fairgrounds. Do your best to pick up the pace and if you have a pedometer – bring it with you! You might be surprised to see how many steps you racked up checking out the animals and crafts!
Have a blast!!!
