August 6, 2010 - Cardio, Fun and Sun!
August is National Beach Month! While reading a book in a lounge chair, tanning on a blanket, and dipping your tootsies in the water sound like the perfect relaxing retreat, the beach also makes for a great gym to add variety and fun to your exercise routine. The next time you hit the beach, think about all these creative ways to mix up your workout.

•Beach volleyball: Playing volleyball in the sand is actually easier on your body than playing indoors. The sand has some “give,” so when you’re jumping, spiking, and running, you land more gently than you would on a hard surface. Beach volleyball is going to work your arms and shoulders and your calves and thighs. You’ll work up a sweat!
•Surfing: If you’re vacationing at the ocean, give surfing a try! This form of exercise has aerobic and anaerobic components with its paddling and jumping to get on your board. It will also aid you in balancing, and if you fall, let the water soften your wipeout!
•Swimming: I’ve talked before about the benefits of getting in a pool, and the same can be said about stepping foot in a lake or ocean. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that works your whole body inside and out. Not only do your arms and legs get a killer workout, but your heart and lungs work hard, too.
•Running: The beach is a great place to sprint, jog, or race. In addition to the sand providing that supportive cushion, it also adds resistance. Running through dunes will help shape and tone your calves and rump.
Use the surf and sand as a relaxing haven. Shovel sand to get in a good arm workout. Do squats and lunges to get a better look at those shells. Practice yoga poses at sunrise with the seagulls.
Whatever activity you take part in at the beach this month, don’t forget your sunscreen to protect your skin, your water to keep you hydrated, and your BiPro to keep your muscles in great shape! See you on the boardwalk!
