I’ll admit – There are days when I just do not want to go to the gym. Sleeping in a little longer or curling up in front of the TV sound like much better alternatives than hitting the treadmill.
And as long as we’re being honest, I’ll also admit that some days it’s much easier to go through the drive-through for dinner instead of taking a little bit of time to make a healthy meal at home.
And while both of these ideas seem like a great alternatives in the moment, I know in the long run I’ll feel better physically and emotionally if I do the workout and eat my veggies. In fact, researchers have found that living a healthy life can lead to a happier life!
Not only does working out make you look better, but it can also make you feel better! Who can forget the scene from Legally Blonde, where Elle Woods so eloquently explains how exercise releases endorphins, making you happier?
Elle is right, exercise does release endorphins – natural painkillers that promote an increased sense of well-being. Regular exercise can also help you sleep better, improve your memory, reduce stress and promote overall self-confidence. In fact, research shows that exercising three times a week is as effective as common prescription medications for decreasing mild to moderate depression.
You diet can also affect your mood. While that cupcake with extra frosting sure tastes good, the sugar crash that follows may leave you questioning if that moment of sweet indulgence was worth it. Conversely, a healthy diet full of leafy greens and colorful fruits can lead to an increased production of the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, all of which are known for their ability to increase levels of alertness and energy.
Look for foods rich in Folate and B Vitamins, such as sunflower seeds, baked beans, strawberries, leafy greens, garlic and tuna. For more “happy” food ideas, check out this article on how diet affects your happiness.
Diet, fitness and happiness – they all go hand in hand! Make it a great day!
