July 29, 2010 - Get Motivated!
Whew! It sure has been hot and sticky this summer! But, you don’t have to let the heat and humidity stifle your workout plans. There are some tricks you can use to get motivated when all you really want to do is lounge by the pool or stay inside with the A/C cranked.
Sometimes it’s just too darn hot out there to do my normal workout. That’s when swimming or even kayaking can do the trick. Anything on the water gives me some much-needed relief from the heat. No pool or lake nearby? No problem! Even throwing a Frisbee around can get you running. Need to work on your arms? Try hitting a bucket of balls at the local driving range. It’s a lot easier to stay active if you’re having fun and trying out a lot of different things.

Getting overheated is a sure way to cut your summer workout short and keep you inside. The peeps at FITNESS magazine recommend starting your workout in the summer by adjusting your body temperature. That means taking a cold shower before you start or just use an ice pack on your neck and head. Sounds refreshing doesn’t it?
Let Mother Nature help you stay out of the sun and enjoy your run or bike ride! Find a route with a little more shade and even one that’s on a dirt or gravel path. They’ll be cooler than asphalt or concrete. And don’t forget to check the weather! You’ll have an easier time not overdoing your workout if you’re exercising before or after the hottest time of day. This next piece of advice from FITNESS magazine will help you figure out if you’re working out at the right pace. Try reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. If you can say it while needing a quick breath every three to six words or so, you’re working out at a good pace. (I’m going to make sure I say it quietly so I don’t get funny looks!) You can check out the entire article here.
No matter what, don’t forget to drink lots of water and when you need to refuel, grab some fruit. They’re more than 80 percent water so they’ll help you hydrate and boost your energy. I love to get that boost by whipping up a smoothie and adding in some BiPro (Try the Mocha Madness Smoothie if you’re a coffee addict like me!) You’ll get re-hydrated and a boost of protein to have you feeling great and motivated for your next workout, no matter what the weather’s like.
Stay Cool!
Hugs,
