July 23, 2010 - Good, Local Nutrition

One of my favorite parts about summer is the wonderful variety of fruits and vegetables that are at their peak this time of year. Green beans, tomatoes, radishes, corm, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, peaches, and plums are just some of my favorites. (The list could go on and on!)

I especially enjoy visiting my local farmers market! It’s a ritual for me to go every week and pick out my fresh produce at a great price. I love the idea of supporting local farmers and knowing that the food came straight from the farm to me. It’s fresh, it’s tasty, and it’s good for me. It’s good for you, too!

Eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables ensures that you are getting the proper nutrients and all the right vitamins and minerals to keep your body in tip-top shape! If you’re gunning for lean muscle, you already know that a diet rich in whole grains and protein (whey, whey, whey!) will get you the body you’re seeking. But don’t forget that there are some veggies out there that are very high in fiber. They will fill you up and of course, are good for you!

Asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, onions, and garlic will do wonders for your digestive track and are low in calories. Add them to your main dish or eat your greens in between meals to keep from nibbling on processed or sugary snacks. Drink lots of water and eat fruits that contain high levels of water as well, such as nectarines, oranges, and watermelon.

If you buy these items the next time you hit your local farmers market, you’ll absolutely build lean muscle without bulking up. You’ll also get the right nutrition and keep fat at bay. Give it a try! Your body and your local farmer will thank you!

Hugs,
