July 21, 2010 - Outdoor Workouts
All right everyone, we’re more than halfway through July, which if you live in the Midwest like I do, means there are only a few more glorious days of summer left! Let’s make the most of the sunshine and warm temps by taking our workout outdoors before we succumb to the bitter cold and are banished to the gym for the winter! And since July is National Parks and Recreation month, I though we could focus our routine on exercises you can do while enjoying your state’s national parks.

Fitness Magazine offers some great tips for utilizing outdoor resources – the only equipment they say you’ll need is a park bench and a tree! How easy is that?!? Here are some of their recommended moves:
• Park bench push ups: Stand with feet hip-width apart, 3-4 feet behind the bench and lean forward to place both hands on top of the bench seat. Keep your abs engaged as you lower your chest towards the bench.
• Tree plank: With your back to a tree, get on all fours so that your heels are a few feet away from a tree truck. Get in plank position with forearms on the ground, and straighten your legs out as you slowly walk your feet up the tree until your body is parallel to the ground.
• Step it up: Stand in front of a park bench with your hands on your hips. Step onto the bench with your right foot while simultaneously lifting your left leg behind you. Don’t forget to squeeze those glutes! While still balancing on the right foot, bring your left leg around to the left side, then in front of you. Reverse motion then repeat on the other side.
• Hot seat: Stand about a foot in front of a park bench, bend elbows and clasp hands in front of chest. Lift your left leg in front of you and bend your right knee to sit down on the bench (briefly!). Keeping leg raised, stand up. Now do the other side!
• Time for abs: Sit on the edge of a bench and place your palms behind you on the seat. Lean back slightly and lift legs, keeping knees bent at 90 degrees. Keeping your chest lifted and shoulders back, tap the ground with your left toe, then your right.
And while you’re traveling to visit your favorite national parks, don’t forget to pack your BiPro! You can pre-portion your BiPro powder into sandwich baggies, or you can purchase individual servings of BiPro (will be available in early September on our website!) for even easier transport.
Now shut off the computer and go enjoy so fresh air! See you on the trails!
Hugs,
