May 3, 2010- Does Human Growth Hormone Enhance Athletic Performance?
Australian researchers released the results of a new study yesterday that concludes Human Growth Hormone (HGH) enhances athletic performance. According to the study, modest doses can improve sprinting capacity in sports that require bursts of speed. For example, sprinters in track or swimming, football players, baseball players, soccer, wrestling, or just about any other sport you can think of.
If you’re like me, the results of this study didn’t really come as a surprise since professional athletes have realized the benefits of HGH for some time now. What is more perplexing is that there are still athletes, in some cases amateur and even high school athletes, who are using illegal or banned substances that can also prove harmful to their bodies.
Though this may not seem like a true “wake up call” for many in our communities, in many ways it should be. We hear of case after case of high school age kids who are unknowingly using strength supplements that those in the Anti-Doping world would consider to be illegal. In some cases, they are using the supplements at the recommendation of their unsuspecting coaches! While we may be cheering on our kids to victory, we may also be acting as accomplices in sabotaging their athletic career.
So, cheers to the researchers in Australia for providing more information regarding banned, performance enhancing substances, but remember, there are safe and organic ways to build muscle and strength. There are also alternatives to ensure the safety of our teenagers and also, on a bigger stage, the careers of professional athletes.
